Component testing for electromobility

Fuel cells have the potential to fundamentally change the way we generate and use energy. They offer an efficient and environmentally friendly way of generating energy by converting hydrogen and oxygen directly into electrical energy and water without producing harmful emissions. This technology has a wide range of applications, from power generation for vehicles and stationary applications in buildings up to the use in space travel. To ensure that fuel cells can be used reliably, great attention is paid to functionality, robustness and interfaces. Both individual components and complete assemblies must be precisely tested.

Hegewald & Peschke has been able to contribute its expertise to various projects and provide testing technology for the production, quality assurance and development of fuel cells and fuel cell components.

Among other things, testing machines from the inspekt series are used for quality testing in the production process of a large automotive supplier at several international locations. In the assembly step, several fuel cells are compressed into a stack. Compression mechanical tests are carried out on these with test loads of up to 100 kN. A test sequence specially defined for testing fuel cells is carried out, which can be set up in an uncomplicated and user-friendly manner using the block program of the LabMaster material and component testing software. Additional ultrasonic sensors in the test system can be integrated into the test sequence and are used for distance monitoring. Special test room lighting enables optimum monitoring of the test process by the operator of the testing machine.

Handling hydrogen brings special challenges for the safety technology of the test system. A fully enclosed test room with electrically interlocked safety doors ensures the safety of the operator during the test procedure. However, the specifications for component testing of fuel cells in the assembly process require the operator to access the fuel cell for certain process steps. The safety concept of the testing machine is adapted to these requirements and ensures maximum operator safety by means of additional emergency stop switches in the machine interior and other features.
