Shell-and-coil heat exchangers represent an efficient, reliable, and flexible solution for swimming pool preheating. Thanks to their compact design, high heat transfer efficiency, and compatibility with multiple energy sources, they are increasingly used in both residential and commercial pool installations where energy efficiency and stable water temperature are key requirements.

Efficient pool heating is challenging due to the large volume of water and continuous heat losses to the surrounding environment. Conventional heating methods, such as direct electric heaters, often lead to high operating costs and increased energy consumption. Shell-and-coil heat exchangers offer a more economical and sustainable alternative by transferring heat from an external energy source—such as a gas boiler, heat pump, or solar thermal system—directly into the pool water.

RAD Series: Designed for Demanding Applications

Shell-and-coil heat exchangers from the RAD series are particularly suitable for applications involving direct evaporation or condensation. Their robust construction, optimized tube geometry, and compact dimensions make them an ideal solution in situations where plate heat exchangers cannot be used due to operating conditions, space limitations, or system requirements.

In a recent project, the investor required rapid preheating of a swimming pool within less than 24 hours. To meet this demand, the system was designed using two 23 kW outdoor heat pump units combined with two RAD 3 series heat exchangers. The solution was developed through close cooperation between LG and the installation company, ensuring optimal system performance and reliability.

Reliable Performance and Hygienic Design

The system operates with condensation temperatures of approximately 56 °C and a subcooling range of 2–3 K, ensuring efficient heat transfer and stable operation. The use of stainless steel in the heat exchanger construction guarantees excellent corrosion resistance and compatibility with pool water disinfection processes, making the RAD heat exchangers both durable and hygienically safe.

Fast Preheating and Operational Flexibility

With this configuration, approximately 120 m³ of swimming pool water can be preheated within 18 hours. This fast response time allows operators to heat the pool only when required, for example based on guest reservations in accommodation facilities. As a result, energy consumption is optimized, operating costs are reduced, and overall system efficiency is significantly improved.
