FH52-Series, 0.5mm Pitch, Robust FPC/FFC ZIF Connectors

Hirose has introduced the FH52 series to meet with the requirement for highly reliable and robust flat flexible cable/flat printed circuit (FPC/FFC) connectors that meet severe automotive requirements.

The connector housing incorporates an innovative, robust locking structure to ensure the actuator can not be removed even under rough operation. The rotating actuator is supported by the tips of the contacts to form a reliable hinge point instead of relying on the housing walls. In addition, two metal fittings further support the actuator from underneath. The firmly retained actuator ensures high retention of the FPC/FFC. The pull force strength is 30N approx. in horizontal direction when using a 10 pos. tabbed FPC and 0.3mm thickness.

Insertion of the FPC/FFC into the connector is user-friendly due to the wide 110° opening range of the actuator.

Special cavities on each side of the connector, known as ‘side catchers’ are provided to hold a tabbed FPC/FFC in place, this enables a temporary holding facility for easy and accurate guided positioning. A firm and clear tactile click confirms that correct locking of the FPC/FFC has been completed enabling a stable and reliable connection.

Two different contact designs are available. The 1-point contact features a single contact with a raised contact point to increase the retention of the FPC/FFC to the contact surface to provide increased contact reliability. The 2-point contact structure features two spring loaded independent contacts that allow movement to resist against vibration and shock. The front contact wipes dust from the surface of the FPC/FFC clearing the path for the rear contact to enable a secure connection with reduced risk of contact failure.

Two different types of metal fittings are available. The L-shape type extends out from the edge of the housing to allow visual inspection of the soldering process from the top. In addition, an enhanced PCB retention force of 90N approx. can be achieved. The I-shape metal fitting is lower in profile and does not extend out to the side to save board space and allow the connectors to be mounted side by side. The retention force is 50N approx.

The FH52 series can withstand higher operating temperatures than standard FPC/FFC connectors, particularly FH52K series that has an extended temperature range. Please see chart below:
