Product News: New RF SMD VCXOs Provide Very Low Phase Noise

The overall stability including initial tolerance, frequency stability vs. temperature from -40 °C to +85 °C, frequency stability vs. supply voltage changes and vs. load changes and aging over 10 years is better than ±30 ppm.

The Frequency Control Range is larger than ±40 ppm, i.e. there is an Absolute Pulling Range of more than ±10 ppm under all conditions what guarantees that the oscillator will kept locked to nominal frequency under all conditions and all over life time even considering the frequency tolerance of the reference clock.

For a 100 MHz output signal the typical phase noise of the V 7000-LPN at 100 Hz carrier offset is below -120 dBc/Hz; it is about -140 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz and -165 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz. The typical „Noise Floor“ at 100 kHz offset frequency is below 175 dBc/Hz for 12 V supply voltage and sine output signal. With 5 V the noise floor is at about -173 dBc/Hz and for 3.3 V and (LV)HCMOS output signal we can see better than -170 dBc/Hz.

The supply voltage can be selected between +12 V or +5 V or 3.3 V. The output signal options are (LV)HCMOS, HCMOS or true sine. Complementary signals like LVDS or (LV)PECL are available too but for those signals the noise floor will be some declined.

For very best phase noise we recommend using the combination of 12 V and true sine output into a 50 Ohm load.

Utilizing such a V-7000-LPN 100 MHz VCXO phase-locked to a low noise tight stability 10 MHz OCXO like KVG''s O-6000 series provides the benefits of both devices: the good overall frequency stability and excellent close to the carrier phase noise of the 10 MHz OCXO device and for offset frequencies above 1 kHz the low power and excellent phase noise performance of the 100 MHz VCXO device.

Typical applications are network- and synchronisation units and modules for professional telecommunication systems, measurement equipment and systems and radar applications.
