Labthink - Safety Control Expert In Packaging

Manufacturer & Provider of Testing Equipment & Testing Services

Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd. is a high-technology company with a mission to supply excellent quality control solutions to the packaging industry worldwide.

As a member of the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI), Labthink has been providing many thousands of solutions for testing material permeability and mechanical properties.

Labthink established the first packaging testing laboratory in China in 1989 and has since acquired many testing and analytical experiences; cooperated with many packaging institutes, research centres and standards committees, and contributed to packaging research programs all over the world. The company is playing an important role in material research, analysis and selection, and the laboratory testing of finished packages.

Plastic films are commonly used as a packaging material for food, pharmaceuticals and household products because of their good barrier and mechanical properties which can preserve freshness and efficacy and ensure consumer safety. But this is the case only when materials are appropriately specified and manufactured to withstand subsequent conversion processes.

Production processing of packages can alter the original properties of plastic films such as oxygen and water vapour barrier performance, tensile strength, heat sealing characteristics, impact resistance and so on. These property changes can negatively affect pack integrity, seal strength, level of protection and quality of delivery of the contents. Therefore, it is essential to test and monitor the physical properties of packaging materials and finished packages.

Labthink is a multinational enterprise which for nearly 25 years has dedicated itself to giving clients peace of mind. It supplies business consulting, test instruments and after-sales services and establishes packaging quality controls for customers in sectors including food and beverage, medical and pharmaceuticals, household chemicals, printing and adhesives, etc. Labthink also serves the automotive industry, petrochemicals, biotechnology, construction and new-energy industries.

“Our vision is to be the global leader in testing instrumentation and services,” says Yunzhong Jiang, President of Labthink. Dedicated to being “customer-focused”, Labthink has provided professional instrumentation and services to more than 5,000 official and company laboratories around the world.

As a hi-tech R&D specialist, Labthink's core activity areas are Instruments & Services and Data & Information. “We not only produce testing instruments for the flexible packaging industry, but also provide 'cloud testing' for clients,” explains Yunzhong Jiang.

Instruments

Labthink markets products under two names – PERME and PARAM. PERME products are mainly barrier-property testing instruments which focus on gas and water vapour transmission rate testing of plastic films and containers.

Most of the physical-property testing instruments come under the brand PARAM. These include XLW (PC) Auto Tensile Tester, HST-H3 Heat Seal Tester, MXD-02 Coefficient of Friction Tester, CHY-CA Thickness Tester, FDI-01 Falling Dart Impact Tester and MFY-01 Leak Tester.

Both series of products are researched and developed based on Labthink's wealth of industry knowledge accumulated from working with a multi-sector clientele.

Services

Labthink's customer-focused services extend to all corners of the world and are available 24 hours a day.

 Sales and customer service centres are located in more than 40 countries and regions, covering Asia, Europe, Africa, North America and South America

 Global customer service centres provide professional and prompt services for clients in Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian

 Two test laboratories support clients around the clock

 Customisation services are available to achieve special technical specifications

 A newly developed business-to-customer (B2C) service gives clients a vivid and detailed knowledge of Labthink's product range through product photos, videos and written descriptions. Customers can use the website to make contact and purchase products at any time.

Data & Information

Labthink Online Data Management System was launched in 2012. Labthink believes this is the first system in the world to provide cloud-testing services in a packaging laboratory. Based on cloud computing and internet technology, all data related to test processing, test environment and test results will be transmitted from the instrumentation to Labthink Data Center in encrypted form for assured data protection.

“This Online Data Management System will help customers conduct an all-round data analysis and storage. Customers can get professional testing reports in various formatting, on-line technical support, reference on historical data and more, anytime, anywhere,” says Hao Peng, Director of Marketing Department.

Future prospects

The establishment of Labthink International in 2012 indicates that Labthink has the global reach and reputation of a multinational enterprise; that Labthink has been promoted to a provider of professional quality control solutions, and not only a supplier of instruments. Building on its growing renown, Labthink will continue to provide excellent and accurate testing instruments, professional solutions for worldwide customers in future.

Client case study

Among an artillery of test instruments are those to measure transmission rate of barrier materials such as plastic films and foils and a universal testing machine designed for tensile testing, peel testing and seal strength testing. Thorough testing of materials and finished packages at an early stage can save losses down the line, as this client case study illustrates, described by David Liu, Manager of Labthink's Client Solution Department.

“One of our clients, a manufacturer of chicken products, procured three-side-sealed packages from a package producer. The specification called for storage up to 15-20 days after being packed. But the client found packages only gave a 10-day shelf life.”

“At the very beginning, they thought this was because of the low barrier properties of the packaging films. To confirm this they went to their local official testing institution. Testing result is the packaging films all had a low transmission rate, which meant they had suitable barrier properties for this food.”

“Finally, the producer found us and let us do a leak test. We used our MFY-01 Leak Tester and found that the package leaked. The package integrity was not good. The packaging converters were not sealing the package under proper parameters, we thought at first. So we used our HST-H3 Heat Seal Tester and changed the sealing temperature, sealing pressure and dwell time to seal it again and again, but the seal strength and integrity still did not satisfy the producer.”

“Then our engineers analysed the components of the packaging films (laminated, of course), and found the middle layer - the seal layer - did not have a good seal ability and resulted in the poor seal performance. Eventually, the food producing company found the packaging films manufacturer from whom to claim their losses.”

“This is just an example which shows that packaging films testing is essential for quality control and reducing product cost and risk of financial loss and food waste,” says David Liu.
