Twin-screw extruder: Flexibility is Key

Versatility and accuracy are a must in the production of granulates: The smallest deviations in grain size determine the production success. With the BCG, L.B. Bohle presents a flexible twin-screw extruder at Interpack, which can be used separately or as part of a production line.

The powdery base material is fed and moistened via gravimetric feeders, which analyze the mass of the powder. This produces coarse granulates, which are further compressed and mixed in the BCG by a twin-screw. The screws can be designed flexibly. Granulates of different porosity can thus be produced, which meet all requirements for subsequent drying and tabletting.

The control concept is linked to Process Analytical Technology (PAT), which enables standardized controls of processes and materials. This leads to consistently high product quality with very low deviations because the process is automatically con-trolled by PAT and precisely pre-defined properties. In addition, NIR spectroscopy is integrated into the system for molecular analysis of the granules. The BCG allows for higher production rates and, at the same time, less waste material compared to conventional granulators. This benefits customers, as operating costs are significantly reduced.

The twin-screw granulator BCG can be operated as stand-alone machine or fully integrated in the continuous manufacturing line by L.B. Bohle. Powder is added via gravimetric feeding and wetted by granulation liquid, which is fed by a high precision pump.
