Product Spot Light – Photoluminescent

This glow in the dark material will emit a green glow for many hours if there is a lighting failure. Ideal for producing signs and labels showing emergency call points, safe exit routes etc.

Available for both the CPM-100 and CPM-200 systems, it’s an ideal product when you require a glow in the dark solution to display your specific information.

Please find below the statement from our manufacturer regarding the luminous value (DIN67510, ASTM 2072) and compliance (DIN67510, ASTM 2072, ISO 15370, EU Marine Equipment Directive, IMO RES A. 752 (18), PSPA Class B) of our Photoluminescent material CPMS15/CPMS215 (please refer to our Technical datasheet for our Photoluminescent material), which has been designed for indoor safety applications such as safety signage in building, marine (oil rigs, boats, etc…), rail and military applications:

“The DIN 67510 / ASTM 2072 are luminance test standards in which product is charged at 1,000 lux. for 5 minutes and then readings are taken at 10 and 60 minutes. To meet both standards the product must glow in excess of 2.0 mcd. at 60 minutes. Furthermore, with the DIN 67510 test readings are continued to be taken until luminance reaches .032 mcd. / sq. meter and this is determined to the length of time the product glows for. As you can see the Photoluminescent CPMS15 far exceeds the requirements of DIN 67510 / ASTM 2072 and will glow in excess of 10 hours to .32 mcd. /sq. meter.”

As per the IMO Resolution A. 752 (18) – adopted on 4 November 1993 – which is a guideline for evaluation, testing and application of low-location lightning on passenger ships, the definition of a Photoluminescent system (PL) is a material which contains a chemical (example: zinc sulphide) that has the quality of storing energy when illuminated by visible light. The PL material emits light which becomes visible when the ambient light source is less effective. Without the light source to re-energize it, the PL material gives off the stored energy for a period of time with diminishing luminance.

The Photoluminescent systems, except where noted; should be no less than 75 mm wide, having a width less than that stated herein should be used only if their luminance is increased proportionally to compensate for their width; should provide at least 15 mcd/m2 measured 10 min after the removal of all external illuminating sources; should continue to provide luminance values greater than 2 mcd/m2 for 60 min; should be provided with not less than the minimum level of ambient light necessary to charge the PL material to meet the luminance stated before.

Luminance Classification & Performance
Figures in MilliCandella per Square Metre (mcd/m²) unless specified
2 mins 10 mins 30 mins 60 mins To 0.32
PSPA class A 108 23 7 3 >450 mins
PSPA class B 210 50 15 7 >900 mins

The PSPA have recently resolved that luminance should not be measured to "the threshold of visibility" (0.32mcd/m2) but rather that a physical measurement should be taken to indicate the decay time to the point of 3.00mcd/m2.

Threshold of visibility (0.32mcd/m2) for PSPA Class B is >900mins (>15hours).

As you can see from the information provided, our Photoluminescent CPMS15/CPMS215 exceeds the recommendation of the PSPA (Photoluminescent Safety Products Association), which state the PSPA Class A luminance should be achieved as a minimum for the applications mentioned above.

Regarding the life span of the Photoluminescent CPMS15/CPMS215 material, as it is an indoor material, it is not subjected to UV light, however our manufacturer has confirmed to us that the pigments that provide the luminance will last in excess of 25 years as they have great light fastness and will not wear down easily. Our Photoluminescent tape is coated with a permanent acrylic adhesive and it has been designed to exceed requirements for emergency egress and other safety standards, however this will always depend on what surfaces the material is being applied to and we recommend your customer test this thoroughly for their specific requirements.
