Labels that survive the e-coat line: identifying stamped parts through cataphoresis

In automotive stamping the part is labelled before it is painted — so the label has to come out of the cataphoresis line as legible as it went in. Heat and a chemical bath at the same time are what break ordinary labels.

On a stamping line the identification often goes onto the part early: the piece is formed with oil, welded, labelled, and only then sent through cataphoresis (e-coat) — an immersion paint bath followed by a cure oven at around 200 °C. That means the label and its printed data face two stresses at once, on an oily, uneven steel surface: a full chemical immersion and sustained heat.

Most labels fail here in one of three ways. The facestock shrinks or distorts with the oven heat and pulls away or wrinkles. The print fades or lifts in the bath, so the barcode stops scanning. Or the label simply lets go of the oily, freshly welded surface. And none of it is solved by "using more adhesive" — the problem is the material and the print, not the tack.

The reliable approach is a thermostabilised polyester: a facestock that has been heat-set so it holds its dimensions through the 200 °C cure without shrinking, printed by thermal transfer with resin ribbon so the barcode and 2D DataMatrix stay readable after the e-coat bath. The label we propose is normally built with a transparent laminate that protects the printed image through the process; when a line prints and applies in one pass, we adapt it to work the way that line works, without the extra step.

Two details make or break it in production: the format has to match the line — the right size, core and roll length for the applicator and the print-and-apply head already installed — and the material has to be validated on the real process, not on a bench. A sample that looks fine on paper can still shrink a couple of millimetres in the oven; the only proof that counts is a run through the actual cataphoresis line.

At Lit-Off we prepare these labels to size and supply industry across Spain and Portugal, with a free technical sample and a reply within 24 hours — so you can put the material through your own line and see how it comes out before committing to it.
