Marposs Aeroel laser systems for diameter measuring

Laser Systems for Diameter Measuring

Aeroel, an Italian company of the Marposs Group, has been designing and manufacturing high precision micrometers and laser systems for diameter measurement and control since 1980. Thanks to their non-contact measurement capability, Marposs Aeroel lasers can be applied quickly, accurately and efficiently to a variety of industrial processes. From wire drawing to grinding mechanical components, laser optical technology ensures consistent, objective and accurate results.
The Grindline and Grindline+ laser systems have been specifically designed for in-line gauging of the outside diameter of products manufactured on direct feed or plunge centerless grinding machines. Pins, shock absorber rods, steering racks, shafts, or any other part with one or more diameters can be checked by the system.
Installed at the output of the grinder, the laser sensor measures up to 10 different finished diameters of each part after the machining process. The ground workpieces, after being cleaned by blowing off the water and oil emulsion with an air cleaning station, are passed through the laser beam with a special belt. The measurements from the gauge are processed by the software, which extracts the measurements taken on pre-determined ground sections, thus ignoring shape irregularities that could otherwise compromise the result.
The operator programs the diameters to be measured and selects the one to be used as a reference for grinding feedback. The measured diameters are displayed and compared with the pre-set nominal value: if the process moves outside the set control limits, the Grindline software automatically adjusts the grinding, recovering the grinding wheel wear to keep the product within the desired tolerance limits.
Thanks to 100% inspection, out-of-tolerance parts can be detected and sorted, avoiding the risk of rejects or subsequent complaints.
Measurement results are stored and processed in real-time: effective statistical reports can be obtained and a remote computer can be used to download measured data or to program the system.
Grindline and Grindline+ can provide customers with many benefits in terms of labour savings, as unsupervised automatic control eases the workload of operators, as well as reducing scrap and certifying quality. The in-line inspection makes spot checks unnecessary and allows detailed reports to be printed to prove product quality and process capability.
Choosing Marposs Aeroel systems means excellent flexibility because the two system models allow measuring parts with diameters up to 65 mm and different types of components without a specific dedication. Their high accuracy does not affect the measuring speed thanks both to the non-contact laser, which allows the operator not to stop or slow down the component and to the patented auto-calibration, which ensures excellent repeatability in a short measuring time. The NO-VAR technology automatically compensates for any drift due to variations in ambient temperature, making the gauge ideal for use in shop-floor environments as it is insensitive to variations in ambient temperature.
