Addressing Labour Shortages in Industrial Manufacturing through Maintenance-Free System Design
Enhancing operational resilience and minimizing downtime with Maxell's all-solid-state batteries
Labour shortages are increasingly recognized as a structural constraint in advanced manufacturing economies, particularly in Europe. While industrial automation has significantly improved production efficiency, many automated systems continue to rely on maintenance-intensive components that require recurring human intervention.
This dependence creates a growing mismatch between highly automated production processes and workforce availability, especially in maintenance functions. As a result, even minor maintenance tasks can introduce disproportionate operational risks.
This paper examines how maintenance dependency specifically in backup battery systems affects manufacturing operations and proposes a design-based approach to reducing labour dependency by eliminating maintenance requirements at the system level.
