India Tightens Import Standards for Power Equipment: 12 Categories Now Require Mandatory BIS Certification

Notes on National Imports

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will implement new regulations starting March 25. Along with previous regulations, the currently listed electrical equipment includes smart meters, circuit breakers, relays, and more, which must pass mandatory BIS certification to enter the market. These new regulations are part of the 'Self-Reliant India' initiative, requiring companies to submit test reports and factory audit documents. Uncertified products will face customs detention and penalties. This move aims to strengthen grid safety and promote local manufacturing, with the Ministry of Power also indicating that the scope of certification may be expanded in the future.
