The Edge Gateway Behind AI Data Center Monitoring: Inside the Ignition SCADA Architecture

How fanless industrial hardware supports reliable, scalable Ignition SCADA monitoring for AI data centers

AI training clusters, inference sites, and AI factories are increasing data center power density and infrastructure complexity. As these facilities expand, operators need continuous visibility into the electrical, mechanical, and environmental systems that keep critical computing equipment online.
Modern monitoring platforms bring together EPMS, BMS, and DCIM functions to supervise switchgear, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, cooling equipment, temperature, humidity, airflow, and IT assets. Reliable data collection is essential for detecting abnormal conditions, managing capacity, and reducing the risk of service interruptions.
This article explains the three-layer Ignition SCADA architecture used in large data center deployments. Edge gateways aggregate field data, site gateways provide operator visualization and alarms, and enterprise or regional gateways consolidate histories, KPIs, and system management across multiple facilities.
At Layer 1, the edge gateway connects directly to plant equipment through protocols such as Modbus TCP, BACnet/IP, SNMP, and IEC 61850. It must support local buffering, store-and-forward operation, and physical separation between OT device networks and IT uplinks. Because it operates unattended around the clock, industrial reliability is more important than office-PC performance.
The NODKA NP-6116 is designed for this edge role, providing fanless operation, multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports, serial and optional digital I/O, wide-range DC input, DIN-rail or wall mounting, and a long product lifecycle. It supplies the industrial hardware platform for running Ignition Edge; Ignition and Ignition Edge remain software products licensed by Inductive Automation or its integrators.
