Spanish Navy awards Okatent contract to install three shelters at Rota Naval Base

The project, valued at €389,888.62, will enhance the protection of vehicles, electrical equipment and auxiliary materials against the harsh conditions of the maritime environment.

The Spanish Navy has awarded Okatent a contract to supply and install three shelter-type structures at Rota Naval Base in Cádiz, with a total value of €389,888.62, including VAT. The project addresses a logistical requirement to provide covered spaces for vehicles, machinery and equipment currently exposed to humidity, salinity, solar radiation and rainfall.
The contract, managed by the Rota Quartermaster’s Office, represents an investment of €322,222 before taxes, compared with an initial tender budget of €359,491.46. Three companies participated in the procurement process.

The new facilities will serve Vehicle Park No. 5 and the naval base’s electrical substation. More specifically, they will protect medium-duty vehicles, spare parts, protective equipment and auxiliary machinery used for the maintenance of the base’s electrical infrastructure.

A modular solution for a demanding environment
The selected solution consists of mobile steel structures covered with fabric membranes. This modular approach makes it possible to rapidly increase the amount of protected space without constructing conventional buildings.
Two of the shelters will measure 14.63 x 18.29 metres, providing a floor area of 267.5 m² each. The third will measure 14.01 x 15.10 metres, with a floor area of 211.5 m². All three structures will have a central height of 6.096 metres.
The planned design features one open end, one enclosed end, and fully enclosed side walls and roof sections. The covering will be made from PVC-coated, opaque white polyester fabric with flame-retardant properties—an important requirement for facilities intended to house vehicles, technical equipment and support materials.

In addition to assembling the structures, the project includes foundation works, trench excavation for lighting cables, and the installation of control and distribution panels for each shelter. The expected completion period is 32 days.
Through this project, the Spanish Navy aims to reduce the premature deterioration of assets stored outdoors and improve their operational availability. At a maritime location such as Rota, where corrosion and environmental exposure increase maintenance requirements, covered infrastructure provides an effective way to enhance asset conservation, operational efficiency and logistical continuity.

The contract also reinforces the role of modular steel-and-fabric structures in defence and industrial environments, where rapid installation, adaptability and asset protection are critical considerations.
