Electric Arc Furnaces: Managing 100,000 Amps from Transformer to Furnace Electrodes
Explore how furnace secondary conductors handle 100,000 A through circuit design, water-cooled copper tubes, proximity-effect control, material selection and electrical safety measures.
The secondary conductors in an electric arc furnace face exceptionally demanding operating conditions. In a large installation, current can reach approximately 100,000 A per phase (illustrative figure), far exceeding the levels found in domestic circuits. This power can melt a complete scrap-steel charge in roughly an hour. Along the route to the electrodes, however, the conductors must withstand intense heating, mechanical vibration and sustained operational wear.
