Motion Solutions Drive Advanced Dental Milling for Restorative Dentistry

Precision is paramount in the world of restorative dentistry, which focuses on the repair or replacement of missing or damaged teeth. Dental milling machines are critical to this process and are used to fabricate the restoration by taking a scan and creating a precise blueprint of the patient's mouth; this blueprint is then used to mill and grind the dental restoration (also called the dental prosthesis) from materials like ceramic or resin.

Motion control is at the heart of the milling process, enabling the dental milling machine to precisely follow the scan to create the desired part. There are two main components of the motion control system:

Spindle Drive. The spindle spins at high speeds to create the precise architecture of the restoration and its surface finish. Based on the speed and output power required, brushless DC motors are the ideal solution. The low iron losses of slotless motors generate lower heat while operating at high speeds, and live temperature monitoring ensures reliable operation while delivering maximum output. BLDC motors provide long life and reliable operation, enabling the machines to perform properly over the course of an office day. Portescap’s 30ECT and 35ECS Ultra ECTM BLDC motors are optimal solutions for the spindle drive.

Positioning Axes. Multiple axes are required to guide the spindle, accurately creating the dental prosthesis architecture. Step motor technology, with its inherent mechanical positioning capability, is well suited for these axes. The level of exactness necessitates fine resolution from the stepper motor, making disc magnet technology a great choice. The P532 EN disc magnet motor provides a 3.6 deg step angle and can be micro-stepped for greater precision; an encoder can also be utilized to provide feedback to the control unit to ensure no steps are missed during operation.
