My Office in the Sky - Georgia Grace

Georgia Grace is 23 years old and has just finished an Apprenticeship as a Renewables Service Technician with Siemens. She now works on site at the Lincs offshore wind farm. Since completing her Apprenticeship last year, she has passed her Centrica Board making her a level 5 Team Leader, leading a team of service technicians! Here is her story...

My name is Georgia Grace. I work as a wind turbine service technician working for Siemens, having just finished my Apprenticeship.

I love working offshore and to have the novelty of saying I go to work on a boat every day is great!

I’ve always known that I wanted to do a practical job. My father was an engineer in the Army and at school I had a very keen interest in woodwork and enjoyed using my hands as well as my brain to learn.

Although I enjoyed sixth form, studying A-Levels in Psychology, Sociology and English, I missed the practical side of learning. I decided to leave sixth form after one year as I could not see a future for me in what I was doing. But I also wanted qualifications, so I started to look into Apprenticeships.

I went onto the Government Apprenticeships website and that’s where the Siemens wind turbine technician Apprenticeship jumped out at me. I did some research into the job, got my family’s approval and decided that I would go for an interview. I was elated at being offered a place - as it consisted of three years on site where I could put my practical skills to work on the job, as well as a year at college.

My apprenticeship was (and my current job!), a fantastic experience. I really enjoy servicing and troubleshooting wind turbines, the interaction and team work with my colleagues, and learning new skills on a daily basis.

Although there are a few female technicians now, I am the only one at this particular wind farm site. I don't find it hard at all. I get on with everyone that I work with and the lads look out for me and support me thoroughly at work. I even get told that I’m now “one of the lads”!

Being an Apprentice in the wind industry certainly opened the door to a range of exciting opportunities. I never thought I would be stood alongside Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg when he officially opened Lincs Wind Farm. It was a great day and real highlight in my career so far!
