Coating Offers 90-Month Fouling Control

A new coating from Dutch manufacturer AzkoNobel offers what the company says is “predictable fouling control” for up to 90 months, even in high-risk fouling routes. Intercept 8500 LPP is a marine coating with an antifouling biocide that the company says will revolutionize the biocidal coatings market.

Intercept is based on 10 years of research and development and it incorporates a polymer combination, including AzkoNobel’s Lubyon and silyl methacrylate technology. The product is TBT free and was designed for application where reduced solvent emissions are required.

The coating is designed for deep sea vessels and has been trialed in high-risk fouling routes between the Arabian Gulf and South East Asia.

Lubyon creates a superhydrophilic surface, creating a lubricating effect. The result is a low friction, slippery and smooth surface on immersion, which continues for the life of the coating. Intercept linear polishing polymer has predictable performance and shows consistent polishing and biocide release. It features solids of 56% and low VOC of 378g/l for application, reduced waste and required paint. It can be applied by airless spray, brush or roller.

The company also is marketing Intertrac Vision, which it describes as a tool to help owners estimate the savings they may achieve by using the coating before they buy and apply it.
