3D PRINTED CAR – EDAG GENESIS

3D Printing is Taking Car Design to New Levels

3D printing is on the cusp of disrupting nearly every industry that it touches, and the auto industry is certainly no exception. Automotive engineering consultants EDAG unveiled the EDAG GENESIS concept Geneva Motor Show last March, a futuristic vehicle built out by 3D printers. Additive manufacturing allows incredibly precise production of staggeringly aerodynamic forms that could take fuel efficiency to 290 miles per U.S. gallon on the highway.

The concept proposed by EDAG involves Fused Deposition Modeling, a manufacturing solution that is space-efficient and uses thermoplastic to build strong, flexible structures layer by layer. These advances could revolutionize structural design of the automobile, and EDAG is placing their bets on organic forms like the sea turtle, the animal that inspired the GENESIS. These structural skeletons help reduce the vehicle’s overall weight and streamline the manufacturing process, hopefully meaning lower costs for manufacturer, customers and to the environment.
