WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL TERAHERTZ LASER CHIP

Leeds researchers set records with more than 1 Watt output power from quantum cascade terahertz laser

Researchers from the University of Leeds have developed what is now the world’s most powerful terahertz laser chip, exceeding 1 watt of output power.

Terahertz waves can penetrate materials that obstruct the passage of visible light and have many applications, including use in security scanning, medical imaging, telecommunications and chemical analysis.

The challenge facing the viability of terahertz frequency radiation sources in the past has been cost and size; the quantum cascade terahertz lasers, at only few square millimeters in size, provides a potential solid-state solution.
