A real time portrait of the driver

Lexus, the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation, surrounds its activity with a noble philosophy: introducing excellence, refinement and innovation on the market. Linking art to vehicles appears to be a natural way to do so . It is surely not the first time art serves vehicle design but Lexus’ collaboration with Sergio Albiac is unique in its kind. Indeed, it goes further than pure esthetics. The Spanish artist’s creation is a combination of his skills and new technologies for a personalized project. “Art is Motion” was born!

Sergio Albiac’s interactive art performance takes place inside of a Lexus and is about generating a real time portrait of the driver, directly on a screen on the car’s dashboard. The portrait is directly inspired of the data gathered over the course of the trip. Everytime a new driver takes place in the car, key information is collected from sensors placed for that purpose. Based on the driving style, duration of travel, decision making, traffic events and other reactions, a computer-generated facial impression is produced. The portrait begins with a photo of the driver before Albiac’s hand brushwork expertise and the coded software generate a series of personal images: a hybrid of a person and technology. The aesthetic of the final portrait changes depending on the immediate data collected.

The aim of the project is to investigate human identities through technology integrated artwork. Clearly, there’s more to that. Did you just say “magic”?

To date, “Art is Motion” has only been customized for Walter Vanhaerents, a Belgian entrepreneur passionate about art…but who knows, maybe in a close future we will all enjoy the experience.
