Safe foodstuffs: disinfected with low levels of chlorate and chloride

Excessive concentrations of chlorate in beverages and foodstuffs are harmful to the health of humans! At Anuga FoodTec 2018 in Cologne, ProMinent shows how they can be avoided with its optimised diaphragm electrolysis process: on Stand B070/078 in Hall 10.2. The disinfectant is produced on site and ensures not just the lowest possible chlorate and chloride values, it is also a cost-effective alternative to conventional chlorine disinfectants.

Apart from the concentrations of chlorate already found in these products from the food and beverage industry, this harmful salt is produced as a by-product when using disinfectants containing chlorate. The concentration of chlorate caused by disinfection in the production and processing process therefore has to be reduced to a minimum.

To take on this demanding job, Heidelberg-based manufacturer ProMinent developed its diaphragm electrolysis process. It produces the highly effective Dulcolyse 400 disinfectant, which delivers less than 0.01 ppm of chlorate for one dose of 1 ppm FAC (Free Available Chlorine). Compared with conventional processes, this is a considerably lower chlorate content and is well below the target limit values.

Exactly the same is true for the chloride by-product, where concentrations are also well below the figures of conventional technologies, thereby reliably preventing corrosion. Highly accurate metering of disinfectant improves process reliability.

The process is already delivering sustainable production for various manufacturers of alcohol-free beverages, dairy products and baby food.

Box

The diaphragm electrolysis process Dulcolyse ensures:

• very low chlorate content

• accurate metering and process control

• environmentally friendly, highly effective disinfection

• no corrosion, thanks to extremely low chloride content

• economical production on-site from water and table salt

• long-term freedom from germs, without the need to transport, store and handle highly concentrated chemicals
