Weld Seam Localization on Tubes
Increasing product quality due to new measurement system
Initial Situation
Client produces different sizes of metal tubes and intends to inspect the weld seam surface. As this inspection focuses on internal flaws, it takes place by ultrasonic equipment. The laser scanner in this case is useful for another purpose.
The tubes are longitudinally welded with a laser welder. In order to obtain a smooth surface, weld seams in the end are grinded. For the ultrasonic inspection, the highest point of the grinded surface must be determined, so that the testing machine can correctly be guided.
Particular Challenge
Manual inspection for small defects and manually identifying the highest point of the grinded longitudinal weld bead is nearly impossible.
QuellTech Solution
The QuellTech Laser Scanner Q6-C15-45 with its high resolution perfectly matches the requirements of this application, as it is able to scan glossy tubes and obtain a reflection free 3D point cloud. This point cloud analyzed by the Quelltech Software, delivers the highest point of the profile and outputs an alarm if the corresponding item is out of tolerance. In these cases, the ultrasonic inspection can be omitted.
Benefit for the Client
The whole testing procedure could be accelerated: QuellTech Laser Scanner delivers quickly the coordinates to guide the ultrasonic test system on the weld seam in a reliable measurement. This way tubes with faulty seams can be screened in no time.
