Infographic: CIE or Bayer? Selecting the Best Color Filter for OLED & MicroLED Measurement

This helpful tool compares the performance of CIE-matched tristimulus (XYZ) filters with Bayer Pattern (RGB) filters for color measurement accuracy when applied to emissive displays.

An imaging system's color measurement accuracy is highly dependent on its internal color filter system. Two kinds of filters are common for color measurement applications of displays—Bayer Pattern (RGB) filters and CIE-Matched Tristimulus (XYZ) filters. Depending on the measurement application, each filter can provide more or less accurate color data. When it comes to emissive displays in particular—such as OLEDs or mini- and microLEDs—highly variable color across the display (due to differences in luminance output at each emissive pixel) is extremely difficult for Bayer Pattern filters to accommodate. As colors deviate from a calibration point, Bayer Pattern systems lose color accuracy, while CIE-match tristimulus systems tolerate much greater deviation.
