Ferrara Pan Candy maintains quality standards with the blow thru sieve from Russell Finex
Ferrara Pan Candy enhances food safety with advanced ingredient screening
As consumers increasingly demand better food safety standards, Ferrara Pan Candy has taken a proactive step by investing in the Russell Blow Thru Sieve™. This investment was made to enhance their food safety control system by eliminating contamination from ingredients delivered to their site.
Ferrara Pan Candy, known for producing popular confections such as Original Boston Baked Beans, Lemonhead, Red Hots, Jaw Busters, and Atomic Fireballs, manufactures approximately 750,000 lbs of candy per day. To sustain this production level, over one million lbs of sugar is delivered to the factory via rail each week, where it is transferred from the rail car to a silo via a bucket conveyor.
Although sugar is refined before it is used for production, Ferrara ensures that no molasses, minerals, or other non-sugar contaminants have entered the product during rail car filling and transportation. Therefore, Ferrara invested in a screening system designed to remove any impurities after sugar passes through the silo and before it reaches the production line.
Following a consultation with a Russell Finex sales representative, the Russell Blow Thru Sieve™ was selected to be the most appropriate machine for the application. This machine was recommended as it would fit seamlessly into the limited space available for screening their sugar. In addition, with its ability to screen and convey material in a single operation, Ferrara was able to improve product quality without compromising on productivity.
To meet the specific requirements of the installation, the machine was customized in two ways. First, the inlet position was modified to integrate with the existing process line. Second, the unit was adapted to accommodate an Easy-Clean Magnetic Separator™, which removes ferrous contaminants that might pass through the mesh screen by trapping the metal on its bars as the sugar is blown through.
