Building the world’s largest shipyard in Saudi

*

Named after the present King Salman of Saudi Arabia, King Salman Global Maritime Industries Complex is a shipyard under construction in Ras Al-Khair, Saudi Arabia, which will be the world’s largest shipyard upon completion.

Covering 3.08 square miles (4.96 square kilometers) with several dry docks and at least 15 separate piers, the complex will consist of four major areas of operation including shipbuilding, ship repair, oil rig construction, and oil rig support. It is expected to create more than 80,000 job opportunities and drive a GDP growth of USD 17 billion in Saudi Arabia.

In November 2017, Saudi signed a three-billion-dollar contract with China Power Construction Group to build the shipyard facilities. Following, 77 units of SANY equipment were then deployed for the project, including crawler cranes and rough-terrain cranes, among others. Heat, drought, and sandstorms are challenges faced by SANY’s construction and service team in Ras Al-Khair.

In late March of this year, working at full speed amidst the pandemic, this batch of SANY equipment completed the construction work of temporary cutoff wall of dry dock No.2 ahead of schedule, a milestone in the construction progress.

“This Saudi project is our company’s pioneering project in the Middle East’s medium to high-end market, so it should set a benchmark for those to come after and thus requires perfection in the construction quality”, said Mr. Liu Jianfa, CEO of China Power Construction Group.
