Sao Paulo, with more than 20 million population, is the eighth biggest city in the world and the biggest city in the South Hemisphere. Currently vast goods are shipped back and forth from Port of Santos and across Sao Paulo through roads. Traffic jams happen in every time section, which causes a loss of more than 1.7 billion hours per year. Although there is an internal ring expressway in the city, it has run for over 30 years and it cannot accommodate any more vehicles. After the completion of Sao Paulo Ring Expressway, it will be 180 km (110 miles) long, with a radius of 23 km (14 miles) from the urban geographic center. The new ring expressway will greatly improve the transportation efficiency of the roads. Everyday it will accommodate 0.7 million vehicles in the peak time, which will greatly ease the traffic jams.
