Compact 24 V permanent magnetic gripper with integrated electronics

Gripping Systems

In the field of automated loading and unloading of machine tools and when handling ferromagnetic raw materials, the significance of magnetic grippers with electro-permanent magnets has considerably increased. Reasons for this are the high power density and energy efficiency and the decidedly favorable interfering contour for handling. After the successes of the SCHUNK EGM series for systems in the clamping range > 400 V, SCHUNK, the competence leader for gripping systems and clamping technology is now presenting the world's first electrically actuated 24 V permanent magnetic gripper with integrated electronics.

Integrated process monitoring

The compact SCHUNK EMH combines the strengths of magnetic technology with the benefits of 24 V technology. As the electronics are integrated into the gripper and it is actuated extremely easily via the digital I/O, the components require neither space in the control cabinet nor an external control electronics system. This saves costs and minimizes the wiring and commissioning effort. In order to increase process reliability, the gripper reports both the magnetization status and the workpiece presence. At the same time, errors are shown on an LED display of the housing. The SCHUNK EMH also offers advantages when it comes to cycle times: Unlike magnetic grippers, no maintenance time between the actuations is required, meaning high cycle times are achievable. The actual magnetization time is up to 300 ms. After magnetization, the components do not consume any energy, meaning parts are still reliably held even in the case of a power outage or emergency stop. A short pulse of current is only required for deactivation. With minimum set-up effort and without having to take interfering contours of gripper fingers into account, the SCHUNK EMH can alternately handle a wide range of workpieces. Five sides of the workpiece are available for machining. The SCHUNK EMH is available in four sizes at a weight of 1 kg, 1.5 kg, 6.5 kg, and 8 kg. Depending on the material, the quality of the workpiece surface, and geometry, it is suitable for workpiece weights of up to 3.5 kg, 9 kg, 35 kg, and 70 kg. For handling thin components and sheets, the magnetic holding force is adjustable in four stages.
