Samsung LCD TV panels will mainly come from mainland China in 2023

On June 26, 2023, according to market research company Omdia, Samsung Electronics plans to purchase a total of 38 million liquid crystal display (LCD) TV panels this year.

On June 26, 2023, according to market research company Omdia, Samsung Electronics plans to purchase a total of 38 million liquid crystal display (LCD) TV panels this year. Although it is more than the 34.2 million units in 2022, it is about 10 million units less than the 47.5 million units in 2020 and 47.8 million units in 2021.

Since Samsung Display exited the LCD business, Samsung Electronics’ LCD TV panel supply chain has become increasingly diversified. Nowadays, the supply of LCD TV panels mainly comes from panel companies in mainland China, accounting for nearly 60%.

In Samsung Electronics’ LCD TV panel purchases this year, CSOT has the highest proportion. CSOT has maintained its first position since 2021, and its share has also increased to 20% in 2021, 22% in 2022, and will reach 26% in 2023.

Followed by HKC, it mainly supplies low-cost LCD TV panels to Samsung Electronics, and its share has also increased to 11% in 2020, 15% in 2021, 18% in 2022, and will reach 21% in 2023.

Next is BOE, its share has also increased to 11% in 2020, and 17% in 2021, but dropped to 9% in 2022, and is expected to reach 11% in 2023.

Among them, CHOT accounts for a relatively small proportion, accounting for approximately 2% in 2023.

Samsung Electronics expressed that as Samsung Display withdrew from the LCD business in the first half of 2022 year, it became more diversified in its LCD TV panel supply lines.

Because if the dependence on specific panel companies increases, the price negotiation power will become smaller. Samsung Electronics also plans to increase shipments of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs in the high-end TV market, which will also help strengthen its negotiating power.

Omdia predicts that Samsung Electronics’ total LCD/OLED TV shipments this year are expected to decrease compared with last year (39.84 million units).

Among them, LCD TV shipments were approximately 36 million units. OLED TV shipments are probably just over 1 million units, and the total is just over 37 million units.

Samsung Electronics plans to apply Samsung Display’s quantum dot (QD)-OLED and LG Display’s white (W)-OLED and ship OLED TVs from 2022.
