The "ZHJAYSCPG keyboard" was proposed in 1907, but AZERTY was designed by Claude Marsaint in 1976 and is modeled after the QWERTY layout of the English computer keyboard. It is used by French speakers in Europe, but QWERTZ is used by French speakers in Luxembourg and Switzerland.
