High-end read device with high-performance image capture

Simatic MV540 is the first of a new generation of optical read devices

Siemens is expanding its portfolio of optical read devices to include the Simatic MV500 series with significantly improved functionality and a modern design. The first device of the new series is the optical reader Simatic MV540. Despite versatile innovations, it offers compatibility with the predecessor model Simatic MV440 both mechanically and in terms of programming and interfaces. Key to the new, improved performance of the Simatic MV540 is its higher computing power, which significantly accelerates the read process to up to 100 reads per second. In addition, in-depth evaluation of the image information enables improved read reliability under even the most adverse conditions. High-performance accessories such as lenses with electronic focus enable a change of focus within just 200 milliseconds. The optical read device enables customized production and complies with automation requirements in the context of Industrie 4.0. It is generally suited for use across many branches of industry, in particular the automotive manufacturing sector and its suppliers, as well as logistics. Other accessories include new, flexible-control built-in ring lights with separately configurable ring light segments. These not only enhance functional reliability, but also extend the application scope by enabling an increased working distance. The electronic focusing function (E-Focus) also reduces sources of error during set-up and so helps cut unnecessary downtimes. Using the Simatic S7-1500 controller, the Simatic MV540 can also be connected to the open cloud-based IoT operating system MindSphere. This opens up new scope for using current production data. As a result of integration into the TIA Portal combined with Siemens IT security tests, the Simatic MV540 also provides a high level of security and fail-safe reliability. The outstanding image capture performance of the optical reader Simatic MV540 is due to its variety of resolutions, integrated lighting and electronically controllable lens (E-Focus). Another innovation is the improved device handling. The unique one-button configuration for network parameterization and the one-button read configuration permit device configuration without admin rights using web-based management (WBM). Customers also benefit from reduced training and standstill periods as a result of the standardized WBM user interface, which works independently of any specific device and requires no installation. With its generous one gigabyte (1 GB) working memory, the device can also make extended use of the autotrigger function, which helps save the costs involved in setting up ultra-precise mechanical systems in the plant. With its two separately operating CPU (Central Processing Unit) cores, it is also possible to implement plants with a very high cycle rate and also applications requiring complex algorithms. The language change-over facility, the compliance with all relevant standards and an international support network make the Simatic MV540 suitable for use anywhere around the world. The optical reader comes with an exceptionally compact design and a high degree of protection IP67, making it ideal for use in harsh industrial environments and installation where space is in short supply.
