20.48M-Pixel High-Speed and High-Sensitivity CMOS Image Sensor for Consumer Digital Still Cameras and Camcorders

Recently, in the compact consumer digital still camera and camcorder field, image sensors are required to satisfy a greater balance of both high sensitivity and high resolution in response to greater demand for high picture quality.

The Sony developed "IMX183CQJ" equipped with maximum*1 pixel size (2.4 µm-square unit pixel), viewing angle size (Type 1) and number of pixels (approx. 20.48M pixels) as back-illuminated CMOS image sensor will further broaden the potential for ample visual expression including realization of high SN ratio and support for high-sensitivity lenses.

Industrial applications demand imaging of fast-moving subjects. However, there is the issue that existing CMOS image sensors are unable to accurately identify fast-moving subjects due to focal plane distortion and flash band phenomenon as a result of rolling shutter operation. To address this issue, Sony has developed CMOS image sensors with a global shutter function and a 3.45 pm pixel that is the smallest class in the industry. This small-sized 3.45 pm pixel realizes higher sensitivity and lower noise than that of the existing 5.86 pm pixel products, and achieves high picture quality, high resolution and high-speed imaging without focal plane distortion. addition, these new CMOS image sensors are equipped with a variety of functions such as a trigger mode that arbitrarily controls the storage time using an external trigger signal, and ROI (region of interest) mode.
