Modernising Plastic Recycling with Hyperspectral Imaging & AI

How UCY Technologies GmbH leverages Specim’s FX17 and GX17 hyperspectral cameras to automate plastic sorting and boost recycling efficiency

UCY Technologies, founded in 2016, set out to eliminate manual sorting in plastic recycling and improve purity of output. They integrated Specim’s FX17 and GX17 line-scan hyperspectral cameras – operating in the NIR up to ~1700 nm – to detect and separate materials like PET, PVC, HDPE, ABS and organic contaminants in real time. This hyperspectral approach, combined with RGB cameras and AI neural networks, delivers high-speed, chemically-based classification, enabling higher throughput, better yield and lower reliance on manual labour.
