Spelsberg’s smart distribution board

Sockets provide LAN as well

Setting up data networks via the existing electricity grid saves time and money and is extremely flexible. The new distribution boxes by Spelsberg already have the necessary components integrated into them.

Although W-LAN is often sufficient enough to set up networks in apartments, the requirements within the industrial sector are much more demanding. Whenever machinery and equipment need to be connected to the existing LAN, decision-makers will also give preference to wired solutions. These solutions offer maximum levels of security – but they require a great deal of wiring and expenditure.

Although this may only have a limited impact with regard to the existing cable ducts in industrial settings, it is a totally different situation in the home or in a small office area. Surface mounted cables are simply unthinkable in carefully arranged buildings such as hotels, practices or sophisticated retail outlets. Solutions are also needed in buildings of historical interest that do not alter the overall visual look and yet are technologically up to date

Topics such as remote maintenance, Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 will further enhance in future the need for networking in the private, commercial and public sphere. With regard to reinforced concrete ceilings, the PV system may already fail at the terminal of the inverter in the basement, and the wall box in the garage requires a network connection in order to communicate the current charging data of the electric vehicle.

Powerline systems are an elegant way to safely bridge sections without the new for new cabling. You do not need any special data cables and can use the existing electricity grid in order to transmit your data packets of up to 1200 Mbit in a safe and stable manner. This technology has been known for many years, from a simple ripple control signal of power supply companies right through to sophisticated building system engineering for which there have already been Powerline solutions available for 20 years.

The electricity grid has also been used for some time to set up LAN networks. Indeed, the company devolo AG had already developed the first Powerline products for private customers and professional users back in 2002. Today, this company based in Aachen is the global market leader in this segment and, with 28 million dLAN® adapters supplied to date, it is clear that this technology has proven itself.

In order to create LAN connection points using the electricity grid, the enclosure expert Spelsberg has joined forces with devolo to develop especially for the commercial sector a number of turnkey solutions combining the supply of voltage and data within a single enclosure;

in this new product range, system components such as distribution boards and distribution boxes now feature LAN sockets in addition to the various proven components. The smart enclosures are available in different sizes and with different levels of equipment, covering virtually all manner of applications. The right solutions can be found here for industrial settings, warehouses, workshops or trade fair stands, just like they can for your own garage or basement. It is almost impossible to install additional connection points in a way that is quicker, more visually appealing or cost-effective.

Once an entire hall is installed with these components, users can then handle the machine installation in a completely flexible manner.

The wide range of components available from devolo enables additional application opportunities as well. As a result, telephones or cameras may be integrated into the system as well.

These new smart distribution boxes offer a number of interesting opportunities for the electrical wholesale trade and specialist trades. While the Powerline plug adapters are pure plug & play solutions that can be marketed directly, experts still need to be consulted here. It is in this way that the traditional electrical trade can participate in this booming market for networking solutions – even if there are no data cables that need to be laid.

The new system offers the basis to transmit data via the existing 400 V grid. In spite of that, the remaining infrastructure to set up data networks is still required – it is merely the laying of additional cables that is no longer required.

In addition, the system can be integrated into an existing network or defined in separate virtual networks via the software.

As part of the first stage, the AK, STV and STG ranges by Spelsberg are fitted with Powerline adapters. Up to 64 of these adapters are then possible within a network by default. Reliable transmission is still ensured even at distances of 300-400 metres, meaning therefore that separate buildings in large properties can be connected in this way to the network in an elegant manner. The data rate of up to 1,200 Mbit/s is also absolutely future-proof.
