Stäubli industrial robot wins Red Dot Award 2021

Red Dot Design Award for Stäubli SCARA robots

The Stäubli TS2 industrial robot won the Red Dot Award 2021 in the „Product Design“ category

Thanks to their smart and compact design, unmatched performance and connectivity, the revolutionary four-axis TS2 series won the prestigious award.

Created in 1955 in Germany, the Red Dot Design Award is one of the most sought-after quality marks for good design. The award breaks down into three competitions organized each once a year:

• Product Design, the original award launched in 1955

• Brands & Communication Design, added in 1993

• Design Concept since 2005

The Red Dot Award documents the most prominent trends worldwide. The award-winning designs are showcased in exhibitions around the globe and in the Red Dot Design Museums as well as in yearbooks and online.

Stäubli is proud to have won the Reddot Product Design Award 2021 for its disruptive TS2 SCARA industrial robots.

Stäubli Group Division Manager Robotics Christophe Coulongeat: “We are very proud to receive this prestigious prize. It rewards the passion and commitment of the Stäubli teams designing products and solutions with unmatched performance, precision and reliability to various environments from harsh to sterile.”

TS2 series, redefining hi-tech SCARA robots.

The four-axis TS2 range from Stäubli is redefining SCARA robots. The complete overhaul of the four-axis series with proprietary drive technology enables ultra-short cycle times and incorporates a pioneering design for hygiene compatibility that expands the range of potential applications in sensitive environments.

The TS2 SCARAs feature a modular design and embed for the first time Stäubli’s proprietary drive technology that has set new standards in six-axis systems, which are a key component of the unmatched performance of the four-axis TS2 family. The hollow shaft principle allows for a unique cleanroom design that makes external cabling outdated.

TS2 robots are amongst the most compact and lightweight SCARA industrial robots.

Key advantages:

• Top of SCARA market for dynamic performance

• Fastest cycle times

• Best in class repeatability

• Highest encoder resolution for best dynamic trajectory precision

• Best in class IP rating

These significant improvements to the new TS2 family are apparent at first glance. What immediately stands out is the compact, enclosed design with internal media and supply lines. With a completely sealed housing, the quill optionally protected with a cover and affixed with special screws, concealed connections under the robot pedestal (if so desired), dead spaces systematically excluded, this is the perfect example of modern hygienic design.

In order to offer increased benefits for all applications, the TS2 robot family includes four models, the TS2-40 with a 460 mm range, the TS2-60 with a 620 mm range, the TS2-80 with an 800 mm range and theTS2-100 with its impressive working radius of 1,000 mm. The load capacity of all four machines is 8.4 kilos.

Superior four-axis machines also suitable for sensitive environments

Stäubli is the market leader in the life sciences sector and intends to consolidate this market position with the TS2 SCARA robots. The robots are available in specific versions for pharmaceutical, medical and food applications as well as UL and ESD compliant variants for electronics. For this purpose, the standard robots are adapted to operate in sensitive production environments, thereby extending the scope of operation. The focus is on applications requiring the most stringent hygiene and/or cleanroom requirements, from food and pharmaceuticals to photovoltaics. All TS2 models can run with food-grade H1 oil without any loss of performance.

One further optional extra is that the four-axis machines are available with an integrated tool change system. This allows the high-speed SCARA robots to change grippers and tools themselves automatically, which can significantly increase uptime in certain applications. Another advantage of the system is that the bayonet lock also allows the manual replacement of the tool or gripper within seconds. All media and signal connections are automatic.

Modular design with multiple advantages

A close study of all four models reveals similarities between them. This is no coincidence, but rather a result of the new modular design. All machines have the same pedestal as the six-axis TX2 generation. Forearms, axes and drive systems are also identical on certain models. Two models of the forearm for example fit all four models with the smaller variant on the TS2-40 and TS2-60, and the larger on the TS2-80 and TS2-100 models.

We will continue to deliver innovative products working together with industry partners and market leaders. Stäubli is committed to providing high performance industrial, collaborative and mobile robots together with AGV to help its customers tackle the challenges of Industry 4.0.

Stäubli Global Head of R&D Philippe Dejean points out the advantages of the new TS2 modular range: “Thanks to their performance in terms of speed, precision and reliability, the four TS2 robot models bring best in class Total Cost of Ownership throughout the robot’s lifecycle. Their small footprint, encapsulated design and high modularity open up new possibilities to use in all environments.”
