For in-vehicle applications: Vehicle Computer VSL Compact 81

Embedded Computer for Mobile Automation

Syslogic, specialist for embedded computing, has long made a name for itself on the vehicle market. Its robust industrial computers are used in trains, busses and even automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in construction and agricultural machinery. Now, Syslogic has introduced a new product to its mobile computing range with Vehicle Computer VSL Compact 81.

In vehicle computers, resistance to shock and vibration has utmost priority. For this reason, Syslogic placed a special focus on this requirement during the development phase of its Vehicle Computer VSL Compact 81.

Robust and reliable vehicle control computers

---

All electronic components are firmly soldered in the new vehicle computer, which also has no moving parts. Instead of rotating memory, industrial flash memory is used, requiring no fault-prone fan thanks to the passive cooling concept. Threaded M12 connectors were used for the LAN interfaces and the power supply. All in all, this non-compromising design makes sure the vehicle computer continues to function reliably for the long term, even under the toughest of conditions. When it comes to shock and vibration, the device is fully compliant with EN-61373. As for EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) and electrical isolation requirements, the computer meets EN 55022, EN 55024, EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4.

Another key criterion in vehicle computers is the temperature range. Be it trains, diggers or even tunneling machines – vehicles are often subjected to extreme thermal loads. In the Syslogic vehicle computer, all components are designed for an operating temperature range from –40°C to +85°C, making the control computers suitable for even extreme conditions.

Quad-core processors: High level of computing performance thanks to modern processor architecture

The vehicle computer is suitable as a data logger, control computer, data capturing unit, or vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure communication system. With its quad-core processes from Intel Atom’s Apollo Lake series (x5-E3940 or x7-3950), power reserves are ready for action in demanding applications. Thanks to on-board wireless modules (LTE, UMTS, GPS, WiFi), the vehicle computer is also capable of acting as an IoT gateway.

Flexible options for connecting and simple commissioning

----

With its clever interface layout, the vehicle computer can be integrated into various vehicles and supports a number of bus systems. The control computer can be equipped with wireless technologies such as LTE, GPS and WiFi using expansion cards developed by Syslogic, making it ideal of IoT applications. To simplify the integration of wireless modules, Syslogic provides pre-installed operating systems, such as Windows 10 and Debian 9, which contain pre-installed drivers, enabling easy commissioning.

In addition, the vehicle computer is equipped with an ignition controller and a disturbance-free CAN interface. For CAN interface support, well-known CAN drivers such as SocketCAN, LinCAN or CAN protocols such as CAN-J1939 and CANopen are pre-installed on the operating systems. Yet another feature enables activation of CAN read-only (passive CAN), which is frequently used in data loggers.

Syslogic delivers more than just a reliable product, also providing first-class service, including technical support during the design-in phase as well as device certification according to industry standards. On request, Syslogic certifies its vehicle computers to railway standard EN50155 or delivers devices with e-Mark certification for use in busses.

Syslogic has a firm grip on availability

---

Syslogic is one of few European companies that develops and produces its control computers in house. This gives the company a firm grip on the availability of its products. Syslogic uses components with guaranteed long-term availability during the developmental stage, ensuring that every product remains available far longer than the industry standard. Its in-house development and production facilities further allow for flexibility when it comes to implementing specific requests from customers. A built-to-order service is available for batch sizes of 25 and above. This allows the company to fulfil its customers’ wishes perfectly.
