Inrunners vs Outrunners
Most engineers choose based on torque, that is the wrong starting point
Torque is not the limiting factor.
Cooling is:
- Heat is generated in the coils
- Must reach the mounting surface
- Thermal resistance defines performance
Inrunner best suited for high dynamic performance, and compact, integrated designs such as:
- Semiconductor systems
- Precision positioning stages
- High-speed indexing
- Spindles
- Robotics with fast response
Outrunner is best suited for high torque at low speed. In high inertia systems such as:
- Conveyor rollers
- Belt drives
- Drums
- Large diameter rotary tables
