Q1: What are EUIPO?

A1: On December 20, 1993, the European Union Conference adopted the European Community Trademark Reply Regulation, or CMTR for short. The UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and other EU countries have begun to implement a trademark system used in all EU countries (by July 1, 2013, the EU has expanded to 28 countries).

The EU Trademark Office began to accept EU trademark applications on January 1, 1996. The term of EU trademark protection is ten years, renewable, and each renewal is ten years. Applicants for EU trademarks are not limited to nationals of EU member states. Nationals of other member states that have acceded to the Paris Convention and the World Intellectual Property Organization can also apply.

Q2: Which member countries are covered by EUIPO?

A2: At this stage, the members of the European Community include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria (newly joined in 2007).

Therefore, once the trademark of the EUIPO is registered, it will be protected by the above 27 countries, thus eliminating the complicated registration procedures in each country.
