Fiber Connectivity Transforms Singapore’s MRT: A 20 km Leap in Transit Reliability
What does it take to modernize one of Asia’s busiest metro systems? A long-reach fiber backbone built for uninterrupted operations.
Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system needed a more reliable way to connect main stations and Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines across long distances. To support this modernization, Volktek deployed a fiber-based networking solution built for demanding transportation environments.
At the core of the upgrade is the NSH-542 managed Ethernet switch, paired with NXF-742TS-20 and NXF-742RS-20 single-fiber media converters. This combination delivers 20 km fiber connectivity, enabling stable, high-speed communication between central MRT stations as well as the Sengkang and Punggol LRT networks.
The compact form factor of the NSH-542 makes it ideal for space-restricted station cabinets, while its flexible management—via SNMP, web GUI, or console—ensures simplified deployment and real-time network visibility. The media converters further enhance system reliability with efficient WDM technology for bidirectional transmission over long distances.
This modernization significantly improves network resilience, monitoring, and operational safety, creating a smoother commuter experience while strengthening Singapore’s transit infrastructure.
