Due to great market success VULKAN Couplings is further developing the VULKARDAN F

High-performance – suitable for all common rotational speeds – robust in application

In 2016, VULKAN Couplings, the innovative provider of system solutions for maritime drive systems, introduced a genuine worldwide innovation with the highly-flexible VULKARDAN F coupling. To this day the VULKARDAN F is torsionally softer, shorter, and considerably lighter than comparable products. Accordingly the demand was high. Spurred on by this success, VULKAN Couplings has further developed the VULKARDAN F and on the occasion of SMM 2018 in Hamburg announces that in addition to the previous sizes, F54 and F57 for 18" and 21" SAE flywheel connections, the firm will offer three other sizes from F35 – F62 with 11.5" to 24" with SAE flywheel connections on the international maritime market in the course of 2019. VULKAN Couplings customers and interested parties can experience a demonstration of the new VULKARDAN F in the original on the trade fair stand, obtain information about the other sizes and model variants, or consult with VULKAN Couplings employees.

Outstanding acoustic properties

VULKARDAN F couplings are characterized by outstanding acoustic properties and they have received the required type approval from all major classification companies. The extremely high demand for this coupling and the satisfied customers also substantiate the practical suitability of the VULKARDAN F: “We are very happy with the new VULKARDAN F as it shows an outstanding acoustical behavior on board. This is the next step for us to even further optimize our vessels”, Mehmet Sengul, member of the board at Bilgin Yachts, stated happily. “As successor of the VULKARDAN E, the VULKARDAN F is the torsional softest coupling in its class, with significant advantages” as Per Tellefsen, partner and consultant at VL DYNAMICS, knows: “Selecting the right coupling configuration is of utmost importance when you want to optimize structure-borne noise transmitted by the gearbox. Effective isolation is often a challenge due to natural frequencies in the transmission system and using the wrong coupling may cause excessive structure-borne noise. As an example, a noise reduction of more than 10 dB(A) was achieved in a yacht’s main saloon by replacing the original 3-row coupling with a customized 2-row VULKAN coupling.”

The VULKARDAN F series

VULKARDAN F is the designation for highly-flexible couplings that are optimally suited for use in freestanding and flexibly-mounted systems in the application areas of ship main and auxiliary drives, and power generation. It is the further development of the VULKARDAN E, which is established on the international market, and it supplements the product line of VULKAN Couplings below the RATO R+ torque range. The VULKARDAN F is characterized by a compact design which results in significant weight savings and a very short installation length. It is torsionally softer than comparable couplings. Thus it contributes to optimal operation of the drive systems and a clear improvement in the acoustic properties of the ship's drive system, and ensures a high level of comfort. The new models will be available in different designs: for flywheels and shafts, for main drives and flexibly mounted generators, a version for auxiliary drives onboard ships, and a version with a torque limiter for a safe return home even after overload-related damage. The VULKARDAN F is available in four optimized rubber stiffness classes and in a silicone version that optimally tune the torsional vibration behavior of different drive systems, and thus achieve a minimal vibratory torque load.

The product advantages of the VULKARDAN F series

• The world's lightest and shortest coupling in this torque range

• Developmed and designed for flexibly-mounted engines

• A compact and short design for that takes up minimal space and allows an easy handling

• Low weight for protection of engine bearings

• Effective vibration damping and high displacement capacity guarantee protection of connected units and thus high availability of the drive system

• Modular vibration masses enable retroactive fine adjustment, so that a high comfort level is achieved

• Suitable for common drive systems and generator systems, thanks to a high, continuously tolerable power loss

• Also optimized for two-row designs in acoustically-sensitive or otherwise demanding applications
