Pilot project with depth

Tübingen, 17 June 2014 –"Perfect Partners”, but equally as good on their own …… Walter is introducing deep-hole drilling innovations in a double pack under the Walter Titex competence brand.

In two product family areas, Tübingen-based Walter AG is making additions to its 2014 standard drilling range. The Walter Titex X•treme Pilot 180, a solid carbide drill with internal cooling and a point angle of 180 degrees, will, in future, be available in diameters from 3 to 20 millimetres. Also new is the X•treme D50 (50 x diameter depth capability) as a standard tool in the Walter Titex team of deep-hole drills. Walter still offers the versions up to L to Dc 70 as special tools.

Deep holes nearly always require a pilot or start hole. The X•treme Pilot 180 is the right drill for pilot drilling and spot-facing inclined or convex surfaces. Operations such as counterboring drilled holes to recess bolt heads or protect threads are other possible applications.

Walter Titex XD drills (XD stands for "extremely deep") represent the latest solid carbide deep hole drilling technology with through coolant. XD drills are available as standard in a diameter range from 2 to 16 millimetres, L to D ratios of 8, 12, 16, 20, 25, 30, 40; the most recent addition to the standard range is the X•treme D50, which can be used with emulsion or oil, a typical application being lubrication galleries in engine blocks in the automotive industry, for example. The X•treme D50 is offered as a standard tool in dimensions from 4.5 to 9 mm. The particular feature of the range is that users do not require a high-pressure coolant system or a deep-drilling machine – with low coolant pressures from 20 bar being quite sufficient, such as are available in many machining centres.

Helmut Gschrey, Senior Product Manager for Hole making at Walter AG explains why machining companies should now try out the X•treme Pilot 180 and the X•treme D50:

Wing superstar: Using a football analogy, the X•treme Pilot 180 is like a winger, when I use it as a pilot drill for our solid carbide deep-hole drills from the Alpha and X•treme drill families – for drilling depths from approximately 12 x D. But it can also play "in the game" individually and is particularly strong in cases where conditions are unlevel and I require an absolutely precise and flat hole bottom. And for all commonly used material groups, of course.

Dribbles all the way through: The X•treme D50 works with high precision in one operation as well, that''s to say, without pecking, just like its fellow players from the Walter Titex XD technology team. That promises productivity that''s up to ten times higher in comparison to gun drills. We have achieved excellent results with this drill, particularly for cross holes and inclined exits. TTP coating, four lands and a polished flute – the form is just right.
