A world first: The LBHS series clamps and brakes without moving parts

After a development period of more than two years, the Zimmer Group is introducing a small sensation onto the market: A clamping/braking element that operates without any moving parts, features a narrow design and covers a wide array of installation sizes. The Zimmer Group is the market and technology leader in clamping and braking elements and offers its customers a highly diverse product range. The Zimmer Group has once again demonstrated its high - quality technological expertise with an impressive innovation: With the completely redeveloped LBHS series, the company has developed a hydraulic braking element that operates much differently from traditional braking elements, providing users with new application possibilities.

Unlike conventional clamping and braking elements, this patented world first consists of just a single functional component that contains no moving parts and applies braking and holding forces exclusively through the inherent tension of the base body. The extremely narrow construction of the unibody housing of the LBHS series does not contain any pistons, springs or other moving, wear-prone parts. The housing block merely contains oil ducts and cut-outs created with precision through the use of wire-cut electrical discharge machining. If this

base body is subjected to pressure by hydraulic fluid, then it spreads apart at a pressure of approx. 150 bar far enough that the sintered metal brake pads lift up off of the linear axis and release the slide. Once the hydraulic pressure drops

back down, the element assumes its original shape again, which allows it to compress the two brake pads on the linear axis (S1). The LBHS is closed in a pressure-less state and offers an integrated emergency function that ensures that all moving components stop safely if the pressure drops or the entire system fails.
