Zwick Roell AG wins 2017 German Entrepreneurship Award

Zwick Roell AG has received the 2017 German Entrepreneurship Award for Development from the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. (CDG) for Category A: “Business for Development”. Together with Don Bosco Mondo e.V, testing machine manufacturer Zwick Roell maintains a training academy in Chennai, India. Starting in July 2016, twelve young people from the poorest backgrounds receive training each year as testing machine operators. The award by the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. is in recognition of the commitment shown by Zwick Roell AG, which goes well beyond purely commercial aims. The awards ceremony took place in Nairobi, Kenya, as one of the high points of the German African Business Summit.

"We are very proud of this award, which shows that we can combine commercial success and social responsibility in a harmonious way. We are well on track with our project in Chennai, India, and the prize of €35,000 will directly benefit our Indian trainees. There will be further improvements to the training program, development programs for our trainers and continued expansion of our academy," stated Dr Jan Stefan Roell, CEO of Zwick Roell AG.

The Zwick Roell Academy

The Don Bosco Tech Campus is located in the middle of one of the largest slum areas in Chennai, precisely where training and education are most urgently needed. It was here that leading global testing system manufacturer Zwick Roell AG's innovative training academy was established in 2016. The company rented a building on the campus, renovated it and equipped it with state-of-the-art materials testing machines - the Zwick Roell Academy was born. Every year two trainers assist up to twelve young people to qualify as Zwick testing machine operators, thereby giving them the opportunity to build for themselves a life away from poverty.

The Entrepreneurship Award

Every two years the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. (CDG) presents the German Entrepreneurship Award for Development in recognition of companies' commitment in developing and emerging nations. A crucial requirement is that the projects form part of a long-term entrepreneurial commitment, involve the company's core business and have an effect above and beyond normal overseas business activities. The companies recognized in this way on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) and the German Society for International Co-operation (GIZ) contribute through their innovative projects to goals for sustainable development.
