Finnish Heating Under Attack
Winters are freezing in Finland and any disruption of heating systems is more than troublesome.
But that’s just what happened last November when two apartment buildings in the city of Lappeenranta were victims of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. This type of hacking targets networks, disabling them temporarily. According to experts, the heating systems lacked proper security because the network they were linked to lacked strong firewalls. This attack reminds us that all devices connected to the IoT are vulnerable, even those as ordinary as heaters. Just as with sensitive industrial installations, they must be protected against cyber-attacks. Unless you don’t mind freezing your toes off in Finland.
