Sieving Coffee Beans

A prominent brand in the coffee industry required a new sieve at one of their European plants to achieve a throughput of 2000kg per hour.

Farleygreene’s Sievmaster Slimline 550 enhances the quality and consistency of coffee beans used in the manufacture of instant coffee.

Our customer is a prominent brand in the coffee industry widely recognized for its commitment to delivering high-quality instant coffee.

They required a new sieve at one of their European plants to achieve a throughput of 2000kg per hour, enhance efficiency, improve quality control, increase productivity, and maintain customer satisfaction.

They carefully select their coffee beans from various regions known for their unique flavour profiles and quality, employing existing sieving techniques to ensure thorough analysis and sorting based on size, uniformity, and quality attributes. However, they were experiencing challenges in their existing coffee bean processing line. Their existing method was time-consuming, prone to errors, and lacked consistency.

Key Facts:

Save time: Quick release toggle clamps on the Sievmaster Slimline 550 provide fast access to mesh screens with no requirement for tools to easily disassemble for cleaning and mesh changes.

Save money: Improved efficiency using the Sievmaster Slimline range contributes to increased productivity and reduced waste, resulting in significant cost savings.

Requirement

Our customer sought a solution to streamline their operations, ensure consistent quality, and meet the growing demands of their customers.

Farleygreene collaborated closely with the coffee manufacturer to assess their unique requirements and challenges. The goal was to customise the sieve system to suit their specific needs.

To determine what machine and mesh screen size was most appropriate for their target, tests were carried out at Farleygreene’s test facility. A Sievmaster Slimline 550 with a 15000µm perforated mesh screen was used for testing. Achieving an average steady state throughput of 4000kg/h, additionally, efficiency of the product was greater than 99.9%.

Solution

Farleygreene’s engineering department designed a robust, customised, Sievmaster Slimline 550 sieving system that incorporated a specially designed Weir Flow Pipe extending further down from the machine’s inlet to a set distance above the mesh. Intended to control the flow of the coffee beans on to the mesh screen, preventing fine product reaching the oversize outlet and being lost in the process.

BFM® Spigots were added to the machine’s inlet, outlets, and vision port, at the customer’s request. This would enable the use of BFM® Flexible Connectors providing a 100% seal preventing product escaping or spilling during production.

The Slimline 550 was integrated into the coffee manufacturing facility, ensuring seamless connectivity with existing equipment and processes.
