Finder SPD, surge protection devices for industrial and residential applications
SPD Finder range includes devices for the protection of overvoltages generated by natural events or switching overvoltages.
The installation of SPDs inside electrical panels is necessary to protect them from overvoltages caused by direct currents, switching or induced by lightning during storm events.
SPDs are classified into:
- SPD Type 1: installed inside electrical panels, they protect individuals and equipment from currents caused by lightning and introduced into buildings by overhead power lines or installed lightning arresters
- SPD Type 2: installed in the secondary switchboard, they protect installations and equipment from induced and switching overvoltages
- SPD Type 3: with smaller dimensions, they are installed in 503 wall boxes or in zone panels for the protection of sensitive electronic equipment such as TVs, boilers, modems, HiFi, refrigerators and/or dishwashers.
Surge arresters (or SPDs) also differ in design technology:
- Switching SPDs: overvoltages are managed by the spark gap or the more modern GDT
- Limiting SPDs: the input overvoltages present in the devices are managed by varistors, able to keep the voltage at the ends constant and with values typically low and bearable by the equipment downstream.
According to the CEI 64-8 standard, the installation of a surge protection device is compulsory in cases where the effects of these surges may cause damage to persons, property or public buildings. In addition, the installation of one or more SPDs is required in places near commercial activities and in all public areas with constant presence.
