What is a safety relay?

Safety Relays Explained: Key Functions, Certifications, and Applications in Industrial Automation

The development of industrial safety evolved gradually, with early solutions such as contactors, heavy-duty relays used to isolate power sources in hazardous situations. The introduction of multiple contactors improved protection by preventing manipulation during malfunctions, leading to the creation of modern safety relays. These devices are critical in ensuring the safety of machinery, workers, and operations in industries like manufacturing, automation, and robotics. A safety relay integrates built-in logic to assess inputs and execute predefined safety responses, guaranteeing compliance with safety regulations and preventing accidents.
Safety relays play a key role in safety instrumented functions (SIFs), where they collaborate with other components to reduce or control high-risk events. Each relay is designed for a specific function and must be chosen according to application requirements. They are certified under international standards such as ISO 13849 and IEC 61508, which classify them by Safety Integrity Level (SIL) or Performance Level (PL). These ratings indicate the relay’s reliability and risk reduction capacity, ensuring consistent performance in safety-critical systems.
Modern safety relays are often compatible with PLC pulse tests, which verify input/output responsiveness. If compatibility information is unclear, manufacturers can guide users through the testing process. Additionally, safety relays incorporate monitoring functions to detect faults and maintain operational integrity. Some models also provide a Service Load (S.L.) output to manage non-safety signals like alarms or lights. Overall, safety relays function as essential, intelligent devices that extend a PLC’s monitoring capabilities while ensuring compliance with the highest industrial safety standards.
