Welding Vs. Riveting

Optimal Joining For Metal Parts

Compare and contrast two popular joining processes, welding and riveting, analyzing their differences, advantages, and disadvantages.

1. In terms of connection method:

►Welding is the joining of two or more workpieces into a whole by melting the workpiece or adding molten filler material.

►Riveting is formed by placing rivets between workpieces to form a rivet joint. Pressure or impact flattens the rivet heads so that the workpieces are clamped together to form a connection.

2.Temperature:

►Welding requires high temperatures as it involves melting the workpiece and forming a connection.

►Riveting generally does not involve high temperatures, but there is a hot riveting process.

3. Connection strength:

►Welding generally provides a stronger connection because the workpiece is melted and formed into a single unit after cooling.

►The connection provided by riveting is usually more flexible and may not be as strong as welding.

4. Bearing capacity:

►Welding does not require drilling holes in the parent component, and the load-bearing capacity remains unchanged.

►Riveting requires through holes in the female part to allow the rivet connection. The effective cross-sectional area decreases and the bearing capacity decreases.

5. Leak-proof:

►The welding has strong sealing performance and strong leakage prevention ability.

►A small gap exists around the rivet or rivet cap when riveting.

6. Processing time:

►Welding involves a lot of preparation work and subsequent processing.

►Riveting takes a relatively short time, especially automated riveting.

7.Aesthetics:

►Welding can grind the surface smoothly and make the appearance more beautiful.

►Riveted rivets and rivet caps will have surfaces.

Welding is suitable for situations where the connection strength is high, pressure-resistant, tensile-resistant, beautiful, and has good sealing properties.

Riveting is suitable for situations where time speed, reversibility, materials sensitive to high temperatures, thin sheet materials, environment, cost, adding other materials are considered.
