Remote, but still in control
New John Deere PowerSightTM offers remote monitoring, prognostics, diagnostics for John Deere engines installed in OEM equipment
Telematics systems continue to gain traction in heavy equipment-based industries. Using a combination of advanced hardware, software and communications technologies, a telematics system remotely collects and transmits real-time information about machine usage and health. If the data is effectively managed and fully supported by expert service personnel, a telematics system can help customers make informed business decisions that increase productivity and reduce operating and maintenance costs. This all becomes increasingly important with the release of engines equipped with new emissions control technologies.
John Deere is a leader in the development of innovative management solutions including telematics. The company offers exclusive John Deere FarmSightTM technology suites to help agriculture customers turn data into fleet management and maintenance answers. At INTERMAT 2015, John Deere Power Systems introduced a corresponding solution for John Deere off-highway diesel engines installed in OEM equipment: John Deere PowerSightTM.
The telematics offering was unveiled in the US market at the CONEXPO–CON/AGG 2014 trade show, and it is now being introduced to the European market.
Introducing John Deere PowerSight
More than just a telematics system, John Deere PowerSight is an umbrella of John Deere technologies and solutions that integrate seamlessly to help customers manage their equipment. Today, John Deere PowerSight features four components: the JDLinkTM machine monitoring system, remote diagnostics and programming, machine health prognostics and the John Deere PowerAssistTM mobile app.
John Deere PowerSight offers a robust equipment management solution — including
industry-unique remote diagnostics and programming capabilities — for John Deere Tier 3/Stage III A, Interim Tier 4/Stage III B and Final Tier 4/Stage IV off-highway engines installed in OEM equipment.
Using the suite of services available in John Deere PowerSight, customers can optimize the uptime and operation of their machines, increase productivity and manage total cost of ownership. Future enhancements of John Deere PowerSight are planned to provide customized whole-machine functionality.
Expanded JDLinkTM options
The JDLink machine monitoring system serves as the telematics foundation of John Deere PowerSight. JDLink connects equipment owners, fleet managers and distributors or dealers to equipment in the field by automatically collecting, transmitting and managing information about where, when and how equipment is being used, as well as critical machine health data.
To meet customer needs, John Deere Power Systems offers JDLink in the Ultimate
subscription version. Information and capabilities offered by the Ultimate version include:
- Location, geofencing, engine hours, maintenance alerts, idle time, utilization, fuel
consumption, maintenance intervals, other engine settings, optional cellular/satellite
dual mode, apps for iOS and Android mobile devices. Additionally, it provides
visibility to the health of emissions components, soot level and diesel exhaust fluid
levels.
The data collected by JDLink is communicated by cellular technology or satellite to a central John Deere server; it is made available online to registered users in the JDLink interface accessible through the MyJohnDeere.com portal or through apps for iOS and Android mobile devices. Alerts can be transmitted through SMS text messaging or email for added convenience.
Through the full integration of John Deere PowerSight with John Deere FarmSight,
customers with John Deere agriculture equipment can monitor their John Deere engines powering OEM equipment in the same place they monitor their John Deere machines.
With JDLink at the core of John Deere PowerSight, customers can monitor, protect and
maintain their John Deere engines from anywhere at any time. JDLink helps customers
manage their fleet more efficiently from one web application.
Uptime optimization
The Ultimate version of JDLink enables the industry-unique remote diagnostics and
programming component of John Deere PowerSight — Service ADVISORTM Remote. Service ADVISOR Remote can eliminate the need for the machine to return to the dealership for service by offering remote diagnostics and programming capabilities that help customers optimize uptime while reducing response time and service costs.
Service ADVISOR Remote allows a John Deere service representative to read and reset engine diagnostic trouble codes and record performance readings remotely. The technician does not need to be on-site, and full-functionality readings can be taken, helping improve machine uptime and productivity.
Service technicians can utilize the data collected by John Deere PowerSight to isolate,
identify and diagnose engine issues before visiting the job site. If parts are needed to
resolve the issue, John Deere PowerSight enables the technician to arrive with the correct parts — without adding travel charges for additional trips to the field.
In some instances, John Deere PowerSight may be able to eliminate the need for a
technician to visit a machine. For example, the engine can receive software updates
wirelessly, reducing service costs and quickly returning the engine to productivity.
Many service and repair issues can be resolved prior to a downtime event using John Deere PowerSight. The machine health prognostics component of John Deere PowerSight is capable of proactively discovering improper engine operation that could lead to downtime. It could be thought of as a health-care wellness program for John Deere-powered equipment.
With machine health prognostics, John Deere PowerSight proactively analyzes JDLink data, fluid analysis and other critical machine data. Proprietary condition-based rules logic identifies out-of-spec conditions and operating practices and measures how critical an issue is. After a problem is discovered and evaluated, an alert is sent to the customer and John Deere service representative with recommended solutions to maintain engine health and provide increased uptime.
Machine optimization
John Deere PowerSight enables customers to optimize not only uptime, but also the
productivity and management of their John Deere-powered machines.
The JDLink machine monitoring system enables customers to document operator
productivity and determine which John Deere-powered equipment is generating revenue and which is idling. For instance, JDLink Ultimate provides access to engine and fuel utilization data to help customers determine how to better use the machine and manage fuel consumption.
The version of JDLink offered within John Deere PowerSight features location and
geofencing services that provide logistics management and equipment security. JDLink
enables curfew creation and instantly sends an alert when a machine is removed from a job site, and the system allows the timely recovery of stolen machines through GPS tracking.
John Deere PowerSight also supports machine optimization by simplifying preventive
maintenance scheduling and documentation. JDLink monitors service status and sends
reminders of scheduled maintenance to help customers optimize equipment performance and extend machine life.
Fully supported solution
The fourth component of John Deere PowerSight, PowerAssist, is a free app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices that delivers customers timely John Deere engine information. By entering the serial number or scanning the barcode on a John Deere engine, customers can access information such as model number, date of manufacture, parts catalog number, option codes, family number, emissions certificates and more.
The expertise and experience of John Deere distributors and dealers paired with John Deere PowerSight will result in greater uptime and machine optimization. John Deere PowerSight augments the capabilities of the John Deere network of more than 4,000 service locations worldwide. John Deere service personnel are highly trained technicians who stay on top of changing engine technologies and service techniques through factory schools and hands-on training.
End users of John Deere PowerSight can expect the same superior support for the John Deere engines in their OEM equipment that they receive for their John Deere construction or agriculture machines.
Optimization for end users, differentiation for John Deere-powered OEM
equipment
John Deere PowerSight offers end users a smarter, more efficient way to manage their John Deere-powered equipment. The umbrella of John Deere technologies and solutions including telematics offers:
- Improved uptime through proactive service and remote diagnostic and service
capabilities.
- Increased profitability through better asset control, reduced operating costs and
improved fleet management.
- Increased productivity through the integration of John Deere PowerSight with John
Deere FarmSight and MyJohnDeere.com providing higher machine optimization and
operational efficiency.
With uptime and engine optimization benefits for end users, John Deere PowerSight offers OEMs the opportunity to differentiate their equipment offerings.
John Deere will be capturing information in John Deere PowerSight to enable ongoing
optimization of its diesel engine lineup, which delivers responsive performance, reliable
uptime and a low cost of operation. The company will continue to expand John Deere
PowerSight with additional capabilities including customization to deliver increased
optimization to customers.
