High Temperature Exhaust Blanket for Industrial Engine Thermal Management
Custom high-temperature exhaust blankets help contain heat around diesel engines, generators, manifolds, mufflers and other critical exhaust components.
A high temperature exhaust blanket is designed to control heat at the source by insulating exhaust components that operate under severe thermal conditions. It is commonly installed around exhaust pipes, manifolds, turbochargers, silencers, mufflers and other hot sections of industrial engine systems where uncontrolled radiant heat can affect nearby equipment, wiring, hoses and personnel.
Industrial engines generate substantial thermal energy during operation. In diesel power systems, generator sets, marine machinery and heavy equipment, exhaust components can become one of the largest sources of radiant heat inside an enclosure or engine room. When this heat is not properly managed, surrounding air temperature can rise, sensitive components may be exposed to continuous thermal stress, and maintenance areas can become more difficult to access safely.
A high temperature exhaust blanket addresses this problem by creating a multilayer insulation barrier directly around the exhaust component.
The construction is typically based on three functional layers.
The inner hot-face layer is selected to withstand direct exposure to elevated exhaust temperatures. Depending on the application, this layer may use silica fabric, fiberglass, stainless steel mesh or other high-temperature materials.
The insulation core provides the primary thermal resistance. Materials such as high-temperature fiberglass or ceramic fiber insulation can be selected according to operating temperature, required insulation performance and available installation space.
The external layer protects the insulation system against abrasion, vibration, oil contamination, moisture and repeated handling during maintenance.
This layered construction allows the exhaust blanket to reduce heat transfer while remaining flexible enough to fit around pipes and complex exhaust components.

One of the most important advantages of a removable exhaust blanket is serviceability. Industrial exhaust systems often require periodic inspection, repair or component replacement. A removable insulation blanket can be opened and removed without cutting away permanent insulation, then reinstalled after maintenance.
This makes removable blankets especially practical around flanges, elbows, turbocharger connections, manifolds, flexible joints and other components that require regular access.
The required insulation performance depends on the complete operating environment. Exhaust gas temperature alone is not sufficient for specifying a blanket. Engineers should also evaluate external surface temperature requirements, ambient airflow, insulation thickness, component diameter, geometry, vibration, exposure to oil or water and clearance to surrounding components.
For example, an exhaust pipe installed in an open industrial area may require a different blanket construction from the same pipe located inside a compact generator enclosure. A marine engine room may require additional consideration for moisture, contamination and repeated maintenance access.
High temperature exhaust blankets can also help protect nearby systems. Electrical cables, hydraulic hoses, fuel lines, sensors, plastic components and painted surfaces can experience accelerated aging when continuously exposed to radiant exhaust heat. Containing heat closer to the exhaust source reduces the thermal load on these surrounding components.
Compared with conventional exhaust lagging, a custom removable blanket can provide easier installation and maintenance. Compared with a rigid metal heat shield, the blanket follows the component more closely and provides direct insulation around the heat source.
The two technologies can also be used together. In demanding engine compartments, an exhaust blanket may contain heat around the pipe or manifold while a secondary heat shield provides additional protection to a particularly sensitive component.
Custom construction is especially important for industrial exhaust systems because standard cylindrical insulation is not always suitable for manifolds, mufflers, flanges, elbows and irregular exhaust assemblies.
