Ultra-thin Direct Drive Torque Motors for High-Performance Rotary Tables
Custom direct drive torque motors enabling ultra-compact, high-precision rotary tables
Modern CNC rotary tables increasingly rely on direct drive torque motors to meet the growing demand for precision, rigidity, and dynamic performance.
By eliminating gearboxes and mechanical transmissions, direct drive solutions provide zero backlash, higher positioning accuracy, improved stiffness, and reduced maintenance — key advantages for high-end rotary table applications.
However, achieving a very low-profile rotary table while maintaining high torque density is still a significant engineering challenge. In many market solutions, compactness is limited by standard motor geometries and integration constraints.
At Phase Motion Control, we address this challenge through the design of custom torque motors, tailored specifically for special applications such as high-performance rotary tables (e.g. Breton-style solutions).
In this project, developed around our TKH series torque motors, we engineered an exceptionally thin direct drive motor, enabling a rotary table with extremely reduced height and dimensions that are difficult to compare with standard market offerings — without compromising torque, stiffness, or dynamic response.
Key benefits of this approach include:
Ultra-compact axial dimensions
High continuous and peak torque at low speed
Maximum rigidity and positioning accuracy
Optimized thermal behavior
Full mechanical and electromagnetic integration
Each TK torque motor is designed in close collaboration with the machine manufacturer, allowing Phase to push beyond catalog solutions and deliver custom direct drive systems that redefine what is achievable in rotary table design.
